Why Implement an OH&S System?

There are many reasons why organisations implement an Occupational Health and Safety Management System.  Implementation of an effective OH&S Management System should, however, primarily lead to a reduction of workplace illness and injury.

Foundations for an Effective OH&S System

There are 5 key pieces of Australian based data which inform InterSafe in prioritising elements of OH&S Management Systems.  These are;

  1. Less than 20% of all personal damage incidents result in permanent injury or fatality.

  2. However, more than 80% of the costs to business arise from permanent personal damage incidents alone.  Incidents which have the potential to result in permanent injury must, therefore, be the primary focus of any effective OH&S Management System.

  3. Human energy, gravitational energy, and vehicle energy account for more than 80% of all permanent personal damage.  An effective system must, therefore, capture meaningful data regarding how employees interact with at least these energy types.

  4. Managing exposure to temporary personal damage will have negligible impact on the frequency of permanent personal damage incidents.  LTI rates must, therefore, be grouped into temporary and permanent injury rates for any meaningful assessment of a business’ safety performance.

  5. Effective management, of high risk incidents, involves the identification of potential high risk situations using auditors who understand how people are permanently damaged.  This understanding is primarily gained by exposure to industry wide data as no single business entity has enough data to accurately capture their real exposure to incidents that have the potential to permanently damage people in their workplace.

Why Can We Help You?

InterSafe’s extensive exposure to the non-fatal permanent injury phenomenon enables us to readily identify the core features of an effective OH&S Management System.  We have investigated more than 10,000 permanent injury and fatality incidents across all industry sectors.  We can assist you to tap into this knowledge base and establish new systems or streamline existing systems to capture and report the information which will lead to real improvement in your health and safety performance.
